Plus de 120 ans apr\u00e8s leur derni\u00e8re ex\u00e9cution \u00e0 Amsterdam, les monumentaux Gurrelieder ont cr\u00e9\u00e9 l’\u00e9v\u00e9nement en f\u00e9vrier 2024 sous la baguette experte de Riccardo Chailly, avec un RCO dans son \u00e9l\u00e9ment et un beau quoique in\u00e9gal plateau vocal.<\/em><\/p>

L’Orchestre royal du Concertgebouw d’Amsterdam, dirig\u00e9 par Riccardo Chailly, a offert une performance magistrale des Gurrelieder<\/em> de Sch\u00f6nberg en f\u00e9vrier 2024, marquant un \u00e9v\u00e9nement historique apr\u00e8s 123 ans d’absence. La derni\u00e8re repr\u00e9sentation de cette \u0153uvre colossale, connue pour sa complexit\u00e9, date de mars 1921 sous la direction de Sch\u00f6nberg lui-m\u00eame. L’Orchestre Royal du Concertgebouw d’Amsterdam, dirig\u00e9 par Riccardo Chailly, a offert une performance magistrale des Gurrelieder<\/em> de Sch\u00f6nberg en ce d\u00e9but de f\u00e9vrier 2024. C\u2019est un \u00e9v\u00e9nement historique apr\u00e8s 123 ans d’absence de cette \u0153uvre exceptionnelle. Ni Mengelberg, ni Haitink, ni Jansons n\u2019avaient dirig\u00e9 cette \u0153uvre colossale au cours de leurs mandats respectifs: pas un enregistrement, ni un concert ! En mars 1921, c\u2019\u00e9tait le compositeur lui-m\u00eame qui \u00e9tait au pupitre, lors de sa cr\u00e9ation amstellodamoise.<\/p>

Franz Schreker avait dirig\u00e9 la premi\u00e8re \u00e0 Vienne le 23 f\u00e9vrier 1913. \u00c0 cette \u00e9poque, Sch\u00f6nberg \u00e9tait d\u00e9sillusionn\u00e9 par le style et le caract\u00e8re de la pi\u00e8ce et m\u00eame indiff\u00e9rent \u00e0 son accueil positif, disant : \u00ab J’\u00e9tais plut\u00f4t indiff\u00e9rent, voire un peu en col\u00e8re. Je pr\u00e9voyais que ce succ\u00e8s n’aurait aucune influence sur le destin de mes \u0153uvres ult\u00e9rieures \u00bb. Il temp\u00e9ra son jugement par la suite dans une lettre \u00e0 Kandinsky : \u00ab Je ne m\u00e9prise certainement pas cette \u0153uvre, comme le supposent toujours les journalistes. Car bien que j’aie beaucoup \u00e9volu\u00e9 depuis cette \u00e9poque, je ne me suis pas am\u00e9lior\u00e9, mais mon style s’est simplement am\u00e9lior\u00e9 … Je consid\u00e8re qu’il est important que les gens croient aux \u00e9l\u00e9ments de cette \u0153uvre que j’ai conserv\u00e9s par la suite. \u00bb<\/p>

Inutile de dire que la renaissance \u2013 voire la r\u00e9surrection – de ces Gurrelieder<\/em> en ce d\u00e9but de f\u00e9vrier 2024 rev\u00eatait un caract\u00e8re tout simplement historique. Certes, l\u2019\u0153uvre a la r\u00e9putation d\u2019\u00eatre tr\u00e8s difficile, elle r\u00e9clame un orchestre au-del\u00e0 de tout \u00e9loge, des chanteurs exceptionnels, un effectif choral imposant, mais elle n\u2019est pas injouable. L\u2019\u00e9v\u00e9nement co\u00efncide avec le 150e anniversaire de la naissance du compositeur et r\u00e9unit un plateau vocal luxueux : Andreas Schager, Camilla Nylund, Ekaterina Semenchuk, entre autres, les ch\u0153urs de la Radio bavaroise, dirig\u00e9s par Riccardo Chailly, conductor emeritus<\/em>, visiblement \u00e9mu de retrouver l\u2019orchestre dont il fut le chef principal entre 1988 et 2004 et qui signa au disque une r\u00e9f\u00e9rence presque absolue. L\u2019\u00e9v\u00e9nement historique allait-il marquer aussi l\u2019histoire de l\u2019interpr\u00e9tation de l\u2019\u0153uvre ? Les attentes furent d\u00e9pass\u00e9es, comme on en jugera.<\/p>

Les Gurrelieder<\/em> (Chants de Gurre) forment un oratorio en trois parties, interpr\u00e9t\u00e9 par cinq solistes vocaux, un narrateur, trois ch\u0153urs et un grand orchestre. Cette \u0153uvre, initialement commenc\u00e9e comme un cycle de lieder pour soprano, t\u00e9nor et piano, fut compos\u00e9e par le compositeur alors autrichien entre 1900 et 1903. Apr\u00e8s une pause, Sch\u00f6nberg reprit l’orchestration en 1910 et l’acheva en novembre 1911. L’\u0153uvre met en musique le cycle de po\u00e8mes Gurresange<\/em> du romancier danois Jens Peter Jacobsen (traduit du danois en allemand par Robert Franz Arnold). Le ch\u00e2teau de Gurre, situ\u00e9 au Danemark, et ses environs servent de d\u00e9cor \u00e0 l’intrigue, qui s’articule autour d’une trag\u00e9die amoureuse m\u00e9di\u00e9vale d\u00e9crite dans les po\u00e8mes de Jacobsen. L’histoire raconte la l\u00e9gende de l’amour du roi Valdemar Atterdag (Valdemar IV, 1320-1375, en allemand Waldemar) pour sa ma\u00eetresse Tove, et de son assassinat par l’\u00e9pouse jalouse de Valdemar, la reine Helvig de Schleswig \u2014 une l\u00e9gende qui, historiquement, serait plut\u00f4t li\u00e9e \u00e0 son anc\u00eatre Valdemar I.<\/p>

Sch\u00f6nberg retient l\u2019essentiel de la l\u00e9gende en trois parties, in\u00e9gales : la premi\u00e8re, prolongement du chromatisme tristanien, duo d\u2019amour entre Waldemar et Tove, puis l\u2019annonce de la mort de Tove, assassin\u00e9e par l\u2019\u00e9pouse de Waldemar, la deuxi\u00e8me partie, lamentation de Waldemar, puis la troisi\u00e8me, o\u00f9 Waldemar, apr\u00e8s avoir succomb\u00e9 au d\u00e9sespoir et au sacril\u00e8ge, est vou\u00e9 \u00e0 une qu\u00eate fant\u00f4me sans fin, avant une \u00e9vocation du r\u00e9veil de la nature. La composition refl\u00e8te cette chevauch\u00e9e effr\u00e9n\u00e9e et l’angoisse qu’elle suscite, avec des moments de puissance brute comme le vent d’\u00e9t\u00e9 qui balaie tout sur son passage. Cependant, Sch\u00f6nberg tisse un fil d’espoir \u00e0 travers ces sc\u00e8nes sombres qui culminent dans un apaisement o\u00f9 la nature elle-m\u00eame semble gu\u00e9rir et rena\u00eetre, catharsis ultime de l’humanit\u00e9 elle-m\u00eame.<\/p>

Les Gurrelieder<\/em> sont g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement consid\u00e9r\u00e9s comme l’\u0153uvre tonale la plus importante du compositeur, aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de la Nuit transfigur\u00e9e<\/em> (Verkl\u00e4rte Nacht<\/em>) ; elle est souvent qualifi\u00e9e de \u00ab\u00a0post-romantique\u00a0\u00bb, \u00ab\u00a0lyrique\u00a0\u00bb, \u00ab\u00a0ampoul\u00e9e\u00a0\u00bb, \u00e0 m\u00eame de plaire au public viennois de 1913, mais elle comporte des \u00e9l\u00e9ments ambigus, des exp\u00e9rimentations et des audaces qu\u2019il faut souligner, autant d\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9ments fascinants qui \u00e9voluent entre la premi\u00e8re et la derni\u00e8re partie, cr\u00e9ant une forme de transition directe vers l\u2019atonalit\u00e9, en suivant de mani\u00e8re frappante le cheminement poursuivi par Kandinsky en peinture \u00e0 la m\u00eame \u00e9poque. Cette \u0153uvre, v\u00e9ritable laboratoire d\u2019un nouveau style musical, fut pleinement mise en lumi\u00e8re par l\u2019illustre phalange d\u2019Amsterdam. Il sera difficile de rendre hommage ici de mani\u00e8re exhaustive \u00e0 ce concert, tant les merveilleux moments succ\u00e9daient aux miracles et aux sortil\u00e8ges enj\u00f4leurs d\u2019une partition luxuriante.<\/p>

Le pr\u00e9lude, tr\u00e8s debussyste et rav\u00e9lien (on navigue entre La Mer<\/em> et le lever de l\u2019aube de Daphnis et Chlo\u00e9<\/em>, symboliste, et non impressionniste comme on le croit souvent \u00e0 tort), est un miroitement, un poudroiement d\u2019\u00e9tincelles lumineuses distill\u00e9es par des cordes d\u00e9j\u00e0 en l\u00e9vitation, qui \u00e9mergent d\u2019un orchestre dont on pressent l\u2019absence de limitations techniques et l\u2019infinie po\u00e9sie. \u00c9mergent \u00e7\u00e0 et l\u00e0 des accents de la Seejungfrau<\/em> (La Petite Sir\u00e8ne<\/em>) de Zemlinsky, ma\u00eetre de Sch\u00f6nberg, dans leur sinuosit\u00e9 viennoise sirupeuse caract\u00e9ristique, mais d\u00e9j\u00e0 nous nous sentons guid\u00e9s vers un autre monde musical, par un orchestre dont l\u2019onctuosit\u00e9 et la sensualit\u00e9 sont \u00e0 se damner. On songe aux paroles prononc\u00e9es par la soprano dans le Quatuor \u00e0 cordes n\u00b02<\/em> du m\u00eame Sch\u00f6nberg, qui mettent en musique les mots de Stefan George : \u00ab Je sens l’air d’autres plan\u00e8tes, le sol se d\u00e9robe, je passe au-dessus du dernier nuage \u00bb : dans ce voyage aux portes du surnaturel, cette ascension d\u00e9stabilisante vers une harmonie des sph\u00e8res inou\u00efe, l\u2019orchestre, en apesanteur, offre une odyss\u00e9e sonore kal\u00e9idoscopique par\u00e9e de couleurs indescriptibles, aux dimensions musicales inexplor\u00e9es, o\u00f9 l’expression franchit les fronti\u00e8res de l’inconnu pour toucher \u00e0 l’ineffable. Le ton est donn\u00e9 : la soir\u00e9e allait \u00eatre m\u00e9morable.<\/p>

Le duo d\u2019amour qui suit le pr\u00e9lude renvoie autant au Mahler du Klagende Lied<\/em> qu\u2019aux suffocantes moiteurs tristaniennes. Andreas Schager (Waldemar), rompu \u00e0 cette \u0153uvre, chante avec conviction et endurance, avec une voix parfois un peu forc\u00e9e dans les aigus. Sa couleur rappelle Jon Vickers pour la vaillance, et Ren\u00e9 Kollo pour le timbre. Il a la tessiture ind\u00e9niable du Heldentenor sp\u00e9cifique requis, entre le Tristan de Wagner et l\u2019Empereur de La Femme sans ombre<\/em> de Strauss. Camilla Nylund (Tove) semble plus en retrait, mais elle d\u00e9livre une prestation vocale des plus honorables, avec un paroxysme orgasmique notable au moment d\u2019\u00e9voquer le baiser des amants ; il est toutefois un peu dommage que les deux chanteurs aient \u00e9t\u00e9 s\u00e9par\u00e9s par le pupitre, car cette premi\u00e8re partie des Gurrelieder<\/em> doit exprimer la passion, la mont\u00e9e du d\u00e9sir, presque par vagues, c\u2019est un long chant d\u2019amour, voluptueux, aux embruns passionn\u00e9s, des couleurs orchestrales qui rel\u00e8vent \u00e9videmment du chromatisme wagn\u00e9rien mais avec une \u00e9criture encore plus raffin\u00e9e, straussienne, mais que n\u2019aurait pas d\u00e9savou\u00e9e un certain Puccini pour le finale inachev\u00e9 de Turandot.<\/em> On per\u00e7oit l’empreinte ind\u00e9niable de Gustav Mahler et Richard Strauss, avec une palette post-romantique et une structure tonale affirm\u00e9e. La composition s’aventure dans les m\u00e9andres chromatiques et les nappes harmoniques qui se m\u00e9tamorphosent subtilement, en r\u00e9ponse \u00e0 la richesse des couleurs instrumentales. Cordes et \u00a0vents sont tout simplement magiques.<\/p>

Le g\u00e9nie de la direction de Riccardo Chailly est palpable \u00e0 chaque instant, tant il r\u00e9ussit la quadrature du cercle dans une \u0153uvre aussi complexe : l\u2019analyse, la r\u00e9v\u00e9lation des d\u00e9tails de la partition, dans ses moindres inflexions, avec une attention accord\u00e9e \u00e0 chaque pupitre, et l\u2019esprit, l\u2019intelligence, la hauteur de vue, et une vision : en cela, il rappelle tant Abbado… Nous sommes loin, tr\u00e8s loin des poncifs qui entourent parfois cette \u0153uvre qualifi\u00e9e de \u00ab d\u00e9mesur\u00e9e \u00bb, \u00ab gigantesque \u00bb. Non : c\u2019est une synth\u00e8se musicale tout autant qu\u2019une exp\u00e9rience synesth\u00e9sique, celle-l\u00e0 m\u00eame dont parle Baudelaire, l\u2019aboutissement de la Gesamtkunstwerk<\/em> r\u00eav\u00e9e par Wagner. Apr\u00e8s un tel sommet, l\u2019intervention d\u2019Ekaterina Semenchuk en Waldtaube (la Tourterelle des bois, \u00e9voquant la mort de Tove), est sardonique et grin\u00e7ante \u00e0 souhait, avec des graves ma\u00eetris\u00e9s et une profondeur pleinement incarn\u00e9e. Sa d\u00e9clamation tragique, sans artifice ni affectation, sombre, sobre et puissante, aux inflexions \u00e9minemment expressives, aura marqu\u00e9, entre autres moments, cette soir\u00e9e. C\u2019est l\u00e0 que peu \u00e0 peu la musique devient plus inqui\u00e9tante, en fin de premi\u00e8re partie, annon\u00e7ant les nouvelles voies de l\u2019avenir : Chailly marque avec une scrupuleuse attention les reliefs angoiss\u00e9s d\u2019une musique qui semble marquer le d\u00e9litement de la raison en de v\u00e9n\u00e9neuses sonorit\u00e9s. La deuxi\u00e8me partie, tr\u00e8s br\u00e8ve, chant d\u00e9chirant de Waldemar r\u00e9agissant \u00e0 la mort de Tove, est un mod\u00e8le de tenue vocale autant que d\u2019\u00e9motion : Andreas Schager est id\u00e9al, on le sent parfaitement rompu aux r\u00f4les wagn\u00e9riens, et son interpr\u00e9tation est profond\u00e9ment sensible, incarn\u00e9e et juste.<\/p>

Port\u00e9 par de tr\u00e8s fun\u00e8bres tubas wagn\u00e9riens (\u00e9chos tr\u00e8s perceptibles de la Walkyrie<\/em> autant que du Cr\u00e9puscule<\/em> !), le pr\u00e9lude de la troisi\u00e8me partie, est passionnant \u00e0 plus d\u2019un titre : l\u2019orchestre, toujours aussi parfait, \u00e9voque le r\u00e9veil des spectres qui se lancent bient\u00f4t dans une course \u00e0 l\u2019ab\u00eeme, souvenir de Berlioz, dans ses fantomatiques asp\u00e9rit\u00e9s. Rien de lourd, tout est fin, cisel\u00e9. La tonalit\u00e9 se d\u00e9lite, \u00e0 l\u2019image de l\u2019univers psychique de Waldemar, \u00e9gar\u00e9 dans une course tragique. Wolfgang Koch, basse, en paysan, est id\u00e9al, dans son \u00e9vocation grin\u00e7ante du r\u00e9veil des esprits. Il est frappant de constater la symbolique \u00e0 l\u2019\u0153uvre dans ce passage : ces revenants sont \u00e0 prendre au sens m\u00e9taphorique, ce qu\u2019indique la direction de Riccardo Chailly : cette musique est en effet litt\u00e9ralement hant\u00e9e par les spectres d\u2019un riche mais encombrant pass\u00e9 musical, ils reviennent, chassent, grincent et virevoltent dans l\u2019esprit du compositeur, qui finit par les enterrer pour affirmer son style propre. L\u2019intervention des Ch\u0153urs de la Radio bavaroise est spectaculaire : puissance, diction, souffle \u00e9pique, po\u00e9sie, tout est parfait, saisissant. Le bouffon Klaus, port\u00e9 par un Wolfgang Ablinger-Sperrhacke lui aussi tr\u00e8s investi, commentant avec un cynisme goguenard, qui n\u2019est pas sans \u00e9voquer Mime, la folie du roi, annon\u00e7ant les \u00e9garements d\u2019 Erwartung,<\/em> dans une musique qui parvient \u00e0 explorer les limites de la raison, aux fronti\u00e8res de la tonalit\u00e9. Quelle force dans les paroles du ch\u0153ur chantant \u00ab Die Zeit ist um ! \u00bb, toujours dans une optique m\u00e9tamusicale, comme si le compositeur commentait lui-m\u00eame, \u00e0 la fois r\u00e9solu et effray\u00e9, sa nouvelle cr\u00e9ation, son nouveau langage, telles les formes expressionnistes non figuratives de Kandinsky nageant dans l\u2019espace d\u2019une toile sonore aux dimensions de l\u2019Univers.<\/p>

L\u2019intervention finale du R\u00e9citant et la fin de l\u2019\u0153uvre (\u00ab La chasse infernale du vent d\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9 \u00bb) repr\u00e9sentent \u00e0 n\u2019en pas douter l\u2019acm\u00e9 de cette m\u00e9morable soir\u00e9e : Robert Hall s\u2019acquitte fort honorablement de ce passage, g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement confi\u00e9 \u00e0 des v\u00e9t\u00e9rans de la Wagn\u00e9rie (on se souvient encore de Franz Masura, 92 ans, en 2016, avec Philippe Jordan), m\u00eame s\u2019il est parfois l\u00e9g\u00e8rement recouvert par l\u2019orchestre, pour d\u00e9peindre cette nature qui se r\u00e9veille, travaill\u00e9e par une s\u00e8ve qui ne demande qu\u2019\u00e0 jaillir : impossible de ne pas songer encore aux audaces musicales de Sch\u00f6nberg quand le R\u00e9citant dit : \u00ab Sieh ! nun ist auch das vorbei \u00bb (\u00ab voyez, \u00e7a aussi, c\u2019est le pass\u00e9 ! \u00bb) Les fl\u00fbtes miraculeuses de transparence cr\u00e9ent un tableau fouill\u00e9, pr\u00e9cis, qui rappelle les \u00e9tudes naturalistes de D\u00fcrer autant que les teintes cristallines du Ravel de L\u2019Enfant et les Sortil\u00e8ges<\/em>, c\u2019est un fr\u00f4lement dans les herbes, un monde sonore fourmillant de d\u00e9tails granuleux de silice, des dysharmonies esth\u00e9tiques, qui charment, et fascinent l\u2019auditeur, plong\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019aube d\u2019un nouveau continent musical. Nous entendons vraiment du \u00ab Sprechgesang \u00bb, tr\u00e8s ma\u00eetris\u00e9, o\u00f9 d\u00e9filent insectes, araign\u00e9es, grenouilles, papillons, tout un monde proche et lointain, reli\u00e9 au vent d\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9 salvateur et vivifiant, sugg\u00e9r\u00e9 par des violoncelles suffocants de beaut\u00e9. Quand explose le ch\u0153ur final \u00ab Seht die Sonne farbenfroh am Himmelssaum \u00bb, nous touchons \u00e0 l\u2019ineffable, dans une conclusion fervente, o\u00f9 les chanteurs, le chef et les musiciens semblent transfigur\u00e9s par l\u2019\u00e9gr\u00e9gore mystique, apoth\u00e9ose qui ouvre d\u00e9sormais la voie \u00e0 toutes les r\u00e9volutions artistiques du XXe si\u00e8cle, illumination en forme de triomphe apollinien, victoire optimiste, o\u00f9 l\u2019art, une fois de plus, l\u2019emporte sur les ombres.<\/p>
